LIFE LESSONS FROM A SPECIAL GOLF TOURNMENT

READ: PSALM 136

Give thanks to the God of heaven. His faithful love endures forever. (V. 26)

The athletes, their families, their relatives and their coaches came from many different states and Canada to participate in the Special Olympics North American Golf Championship held at the Penn National Golf Club, my home course, in Fayetteville, PA.  Additionally, in conjunction with this event, the Special Olympics of Pennsylvania held their tournament at the same venue.  My wife and I along with many volunteers from our community, and far beyond, were privileged to serve the 350 superb athletes who participated in these events.  It was indeed a ‘special golf tournament!”   The participants demonstrated their determination and dedication in overcoming physical and mental challenges to master the unique skills associated with the game of golf.  From Level One players who were participating in events that would hone the basic skills of the game, to the Levels 3, 4 and 5 players whose mastery of the game enabled them to compete competitively in there days of nine- and 18-hole events, the tournament taught everyone valuable lessons in sportsmanship, respect, courage and love.

Sportsmanship was reflected by the constant volleys of “good shot” between the participants; by the ‘high fives” given between competing players and by the volunteers to the players and caddies as they hit the course at the beginning and end of each round; and by the applause and recognition given at the awards ceremony by players, families, volunteers and staff.  One of the hallmarks of the event was the kindness and respect shown to every participant, their family, the volunteers and staff.  Encouragement was a tournament watchword—everyone was valued.  Courage was not in short supply as the athletes strived and overcame personal limitations to give their best efforts every day.  They overcame the challenges the course presented; persevered through individual hole setbacks; celebrated their success and that of their playing partners; and exhibited the strength and courage required to “finish strong.”  Finally, and most importantly, the entire tournament was underscored by love.  The constant and binding love of families, relatives and caregivers who remain ever faithful to the athletes—a responsibility that lasts forever!  Loving advice, instruction and support from the coaches, caddies and the Special Olympics Staff which enables these golf athletes to fulfill their playing dreams and giving them, and their family, recognition, joy and hope!  Love expressed by countless miles trudged by family members and friends to support and “root on” their athletes.  Finally, love expressed by the silent thanks to God given for the perfect golf weather and the opportunity to bless and be blessed by these “special athletes.”

PAUSE FOR REFLECTION AND PRAYER

In a thank you note to all the volunteers, Darin the Head Professional stated, “It was a true blessing to host this golf tournament for Special Olympics.  It was a blessing made possible through God and His never-ending goodness and love for everyone.

GIVE THANKS TO THE LORD FOR HE IS GOOD!  HIS FAITHFUL LOVE ENDURES FOREVER.  AMEN
