READ: ACTS 3: 37-47
And all the believers met together constantly sharing everything they had. (V.44)
Spring arrived and my backyard was alive with a community of birds. There are robins, blackbirds, cardinals, blue jays, doves, and the occasional hawk seeking todays “Blue-plate Special.” The main community consumed worms and insects found in my lawn; grabbed all types of loose material and built nests; and of course, engaged in life creating mating rituals. Despite the presence of many species and sizes, they all amazingly respected each other as they fed, foraged and nested with few serious bird fights. In fact, this “Body of Birds” showed their community spirit when my neighbor’s cat appeared in their midst looking for a meal. The minute the cat was detected, the blackbirds and robins staged a ferocious aerial attack driving off the predator and restoring community peace.
Watching the various species of bird’s function as a harmonious community, I was reminded of how the Body of Believers is created out of great diversity. This diversity is derived of people from many ethnic, racial and cultural backgrounds; by both genders; by people with many different talents; by people of different resource levels; and by people of all different character, personality and physical traits. The body derives its unity, direction and life sustaining purpose, not from nature, but from its universal belief in the supremacy over all dominion by the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Its strength is found in the common bond of absolute truth revealed by the life, death and resurrection of its founder and head-Jesus Christ. Its dedication to service and mutual care for its members is rooted in the unbridled love, grace, forgiveness and compassion modeled and taught by is one true Rabbi-Jesus. Its central missional elements are marked by servanthood to others and carrying the beckoning call of Christ to the ends of the earth. It’s constantly recharging its life sustaining spirit through reverent worship; corporate and deeply relational prayer; intimate self-examination, confession and repentance; intentional study of the words, actions and teachings of the Father and Son; dedication to following the direction and lead of the Spirit; and sharing the Lords Supper of remembrance together. Finally, this unique body shares everything– their time, talents and treasures freely with all who enter into membership. Truly, the Body of Christ which was established over 2,020 years ago is still vibrant, alive and expanding!
PAUSE FOR REFLECTION AND PRAYER
What a blessing to be a valued member of the Body of Christ today and thru eternity.
Dear Jesus, thank you for knitting us in all our splendid diversity into one body of believers and one church to your Glory.
