READ: 2 Timothy 3: 10-17
All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right.
The work of a police office is totally governed by the proverbial “book!” This document of astounding length is composed of a plethora of rules, regulations and procedures governing every conceivable aspect of police operations and conduct. “The book” covers everything ranging from specified rules of personal conduct, employment of lethal force, pursuit driving, investigative procedures and report writing to acceptable grooming standards. I was always amazed at the time, knowledge and organizational skills that went into the preparation and maintenance of these constantly changing and expanding operational standards.
When I started my career as a police officer, I was given a 12’’ x 10” hardcover copy of our General Orders Manuel and required to carry it with me at all times. It was eventually reduced in size, but not in volume, to make it easier to handle in my “vehicle office.” Prior to my retirement, thought was being given to putting the document “online” for reference in the new computer driven work environment. To be honest, no one really cared for “The book.” It’s never-ending list of “do’s and don’ts” were often viewed as impairments on officer attempts to effectively enforce the law. Yet, it was necessary to ensure uniformity in the enforcement environment. Today, officers are being empowered to craft solutions to the ever more complex and time sensitive situations they face each day. Placing responsibility with the First Responder has enabled them to fully use their unique talents, experience and skills in unison with “the book” to produce safer communities.
Paul teaches we should feel empowered by the Bible. It sets forth the God inspired principles and directions we need for righteous living. We need to take our Bibles off the shelf and actively use them to govern every aspect of our lives. Our lives are becoming increasing complex as society and culture change a warp speed. Without the Bible for direction, we are vulnerable to getting into serious trouble by doing things our way or following the misguided directions of secular world. God gave us the Bible to prepare us for the freedom to do His transforming work in our lives. When we trust Jesus, read the Bible, pray, follow the lead of the Spirit, and worship on a regular basis, we will be empowered and properly prepared to live a life that is pleasing to Christ. Empowered by JESUS and GOD’S BOOK, what could be better?
