READ: GALATIANS 3: 24-4: 7
There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male or female. For you are all Christians—you are one in Christ Jesus. (V. 3: 26)
“The Badge” is the visible symbol of trust and authority in law enforcement. The type of agency you work for does not matter, as all who work in this noble profession are issued a badge. They come in all shapes and sizes and are crafted from gold or silver. They denote the esteem of the position, and the value of the services rendered by the holder. Identification cards change in nature and content, but the static symbol of the law enforcement badge remains unchanged from generation to generation.
Upon successful completion of training, all newly sworn law enforcement officers are presented with their badges. These publicly identify them as members of a unique group of professional people—the Brotherhood and Sisterhood of Law Enforcement. Badges, denoting rank, are also given during promotional ceremonies; badges are used to adorn plaques and documents acknowledging acts of valor or accomplishment; and badges are draped in black and given to surviving family members when a brother or sister has fallen in the line of duty. Finally, when one retires, the highlight of their retirement ceremony is the presentation of their badge plaque given in recognition of their years of service. Truly once given, “the badge” stays with you for the rest of your life.
The hallmark of the Christian faith is not the sign of the fish, a WWJD bracelet, or even a picture of Jesus. No, it is the unmistakable sign of “The Cross!” A simple wooden icon marks the single most important event in the course of human history—the life, death and resurrection of God’s own son, Christ Jesus. You see, when Believers complete their training period highlighted by Bible study, Christian based instruction by pastors, teachers and mentors, confession and repentance, humble prayer, and heart rendered acceptance of Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we are welcomed into the God’s family. Our badge of identity becomes the Cross!
Unlike the Law Enforcement Family, whose membership is exclusive to those in the profession, the Christian Family is inclusive and open to all who freely profess faith in Christ. It is faith alone that unties the wonderfully diverse family of Believers. They boldly go forth spreading the Good News empowered by their badges of universal acceptance—the Cross! By clinging to it, no bearer will ever have to forfeit this eternal badge of forgiveness, mercy and salvation. Jesus is waiting, why not identify with him today.
