“STAY THE COURSE”

READ: JOSHUA 1

“This is my command—be strong and courageous!  Do not be afraid or discouraged.  For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (V. 9)

Two Burnside Minnesota Police Officers and a Paramedic were killed early Sunday morning when they responded to a call for a Domestic Disturbance.  Officer Paul Elmstrand, 27, a 7-year veteran, and Officer Matthew Ruge, 27, a 4-year veteran were shot and killed along with Paramedic Adam Finseth, 40, who was selflessly assisting with one of the downed officers.  Sgt. Adam Medlicott was also shot by the heavily armed suspect but thanks to the Lord will recover.  Officers Elmstrand and Ruge join the list of 221 law enforcement heroes who have given their lives in the service of their communities since 2020.  Families, departments and communities mourn and grieve the loss of each of these courageous men and women who gave everything to “Protect and Serve.”   Beyond the shadow any of doubt, the sacrifice of the Burnside Minnesota Officers and Paramedic will never be forgotten.  But the key question is—what do you tell their fellow officers and paramedics who will still report for duty each day?  The simple answer was rendered by a member of a Sheriff’s Association- “you stay the course!”  Despite the heart break and realization that life for law enforcement officers is fragile, they will continue to do their duty with integrity and complete dedication—for the memory of their fallen brothers and sisters demands no less. They can confidently remember; God has sanctioned the noble profession of law enforcement; He gives officers the courage and strength to meet each challenge; and will be with them at all times and places!

Joshua, upon Moses’ death, heard encouraging words directly from the Lord when he accepted the heavy burden of leading the Israelites into the Promised Land.  Knowing full well the sacrifices Moses had to make just to get the people out of Egypt, through the wilderness and to the outskirts of the Promised Land, the Lord assured Joshua that he would never fail or abandon him.  These words helped sustain Joshua’s faith for the extremely difficult times ahead.  They also enabled him to meet the Lord’s command to be strong and courageous and suppress any fear or doubt as he set forth on his leadership journey.  In 1406 BC, the Israelites entered the land of Canaan thanks to the God sanctioned and inspired work of Joshua, Son of Nun, who faithfully “stayed the course!”

PAUSE FOR REFLECTION AND PRAYER

No matter our station in life, we have all been assigned roles and work by God.  Whatever your chosen field of endeavor, you will face challenges and obstacles that will test your devotion, strength and faith.  During those times, but in reality, at all times, we must remember God’s command to be strong and courageous and His promise to never fail nor abandon us.

Dear God, Thank you for being with me, as you were with Joshua, helping me stay the course you have set before me.
