Police cars with flashing lights on top pulled over on the road

UNFAILING

READ: PSALM 100

For the Lord is good.  His unfailing love continues forever, and his faithfulness to each generation. (V. 5)

Detective Sergeant Cody Becker, Detective Mark Baker and Detective Isaiah Emenheiser of the Northern York Regional Police Department in Pennsylvania lost their lives in the line of duty on September 5, 2025.  They were ambushed by a person they were seeking to arrest in connection with a domestic violence incident.  Tragic.  Senseless.  Unimaginable.  Husbands, fathers and dedicated police officers’ lives ended in less than two minutes.  Once again, we are reminded of the somber reality that police service is not only demanding but inherently dangerous.  Don’t begin to understand why it happened.  A community, a state, a nation, a department and three families in mourning.  But I do know that God’s unfailing love, mercy and grace has opened heavens gates for these brother officers who were unfailing, unflinching and unwavering in their dedication to duty.  I know that Jesus will be right beside the families as they work through unspeakable grief.   I know Jesus will walk with the members of the Northern York Regional Police Department as they come to terms with the loss of three branches from their police family tree.  I know Jesus will make sure these officers’ legacies will be written in heaven and on the hearts of all who knew them.  Yes, Jesus’ love is unfailing and never ending!

Tragic and difficult times in our lives serve as a catalyst for us to take a deeper look at our faith.  When we confessed Jesus as our Lord and Savior, (Romans 10:9-10), we were given salvation but not promised lives free from suffering, trials and tribulations.  Peter tells us that the trials of our lives will endure for just a little while but refines our faith, as fire purifies gold, making it steadfast, sturdy and strong (1 Peter 1:6-7).   During these testing times we must keep our focus on Christ and the victory he won for us over the powers of sin and death to prevent the Devil from tearing you away from your faith like a lion devours its prey (2 Peter 5: 8).  Overcoming tremendous grief and loss requires intense personal effort and complete reliance and trust in God and Jesus.  They are unflinching in their dedication to help you keep your faith rock solid; unwavering in their efforts to bring you peace and comfort; and unfailing in their love as they restore and place your faith on a firm foundation.

PAUSE FOR REFLECTION AND PRAYER

Boundless love, boundless mercy and boundless grace are the chosen instruments that God uses to get us through the tragic, devasting, unthinkable and unexpected seasons of our lives.  They are expressed through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, who’s presence we will feel as he walks beside us through the tumult.  Uncertainty will be vanquished and replaced with the peace of Christ.

DEAR GOD, thank you for the inseparable power of your love as revealed in Christ Jesus, our Lord (Romans 8: 39).
